If you have been following ASEAN startup scene, the latest hotspot seems to be coming from Cyber Jaya, a purpose built tech town south of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In effort to bring ASEAN startups together Malaysian government have pumped in millions of dollars in a concerted series of events. Accelerator MaGIC and it’s affiliated award Rice Bowl Startups Award are just some of the highlights of this year.
For this ASEAN wide award, quite a number of startups have been nominated for various categories of awards. Ranging from Woman in Business to Golden Rice Bowl: Startup Business of the year, there is an award for any kind of business. Businesses nominated include a wide variety; from Jewellery, media, medical supplies to plain old “scalable internet startups”.
Out of the Myanmar startups nominated, these were the few that caught our attention: StarTicket, GoBus (two bus ticketing startups from Myanmar), Global New Wave Technologies (app development team), Unique Microfinance (for social enterprise category), and Mizzima Media (a well known media).
Finalists are announced on 15th Oct in a press conference in KL. While we could see one of the finalist from Myanmar making her way to KL for the occasion, we didn’t see a lot of them being able to visit in person. In any case here are the three finalists from Myanmar along with the category of award they are short listed for.

Star Ticket — Tech Startup of the Year along with Thai and Singaporean startups.
LinkAge Yangon — University Startup of the Year in competition with Malaysian and Indonesian startups
Mizzima Media — Media Startup of the Year competing against two Malaysian startups.
All in all, we would like to congratulate these three teams for making it to Finalist. With the limited startup population in the industry, Myanmar startups did great regardless of the award outcomes which we will see in a few weeks time.
